Privacy Policy

Who we are

Koumen Tools (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the website located at https://tool.koumen.net (the “Service”). We are an independent software studio that builds small, browser-based utilities. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and what you can do about it.

Privacy questions and requests: support@koumen.net

1. Information we collect

Information you give us. When you buy a licence, contact support, or subscribe to a newsletter, we receive the email address you provide and, if you write to us, the contents of your message. If you use a licence key, we store the key and the email address it was issued to.

Payment information. All payments are processed by our Merchant of Record, Creem (creem.io). Creem collects your name, billing address, and payment method details directly. We never see or store your card number, CVC, or full billing address. We receive only a confirmation that an order was paid, the order amount, the product purchased, and the email address associated with the order.

Technical information. Like almost every website, our server records the IP address, browser user-agent, requested URL, and timestamp of each request in standard access logs. These logs are used for security and troubleshooting and are rotated automatically.

Information processed in your browser. Our calculators and converters run entirely on your device. Numbers you type into a calculator and text you paste into a converter are processed locally and are not transmitted to our servers.

Files you open with our tools. Several tools let you choose a file — an image to compress, PDFs to merge or split, photos to turn into a PDF. Those files are never uploaded. They are read by JavaScript running inside your browser tab and worked on by your own device. No copy is sent to our servers, written to our disk, or passed to any third party, so there is no file for us to keep, log, or delete. Closing the tab discards everything.

You do not have to take this on trust. Open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use any tool — you will see no request carrying your file.

Visit counts. We keep a plain count of how many people open each page, so we know which tools are worth maintaining. The record holds three things: the page path, the date, and a visitor identifier computed as a one-way hash of your IP address, your browser’s user-agent string, the date, and a secret value we hold. That hash cannot be reversed into an address, and it changes every day, so it is enough to answer “how many people visited today” and nothing else. We do not store your IP address, we do not set an analytics cookie, we do not use Google Analytics or any third-party tracker, and we never sell or share these numbers. Because the identifier expires each day and cannot be linked back to a person, we treat this as aggregate statistics rather than personal data.

If you would rather not be counted at all, the dashboard behind these numbers has a switch that excludes your own browser. It has no effect on what the site does for you.

2. Cookies and local storage

We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies. We use browser local storage for one purpose: to remember that you have unlocked a paid tool, so you do not have to re-enter your licence key on every visit. You can clear this at any time through your browser settings; doing so will require you to re-enter your licence key.

Our payment provider may set its own cookies during checkout on its own domain. Those cookies are governed by Creem’s privacy policy.

3. How we use information

  • To deliver the products and licence keys you purchased;
  • To respond to support requests and refund requests;
  • To detect fraud, abuse, and unauthorised sharing of licence keys;
  • To keep the Service secure and diagnose technical problems;
  • To comply with legal, tax, and accounting obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.

4. Legal bases (EEA and UK visitors)

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on: performance of a contract (delivering what you paid for), legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, basic site operation), and consent where we ask for it, such as an optional newsletter. You may withdraw consent at any time.

5. Who we share data with

  • Creem — payment processing, tax calculation, invoicing, and refunds, as Merchant of Record;
  • Our hosting provider — servers that deliver this website;
  • Email provider — for transactional email such as licence delivery;
  • Authorities — where we are legally required to disclose.

6. International transfers

Our servers and service providers may be located outside your country. Where data leaves the EEA or UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses offered by our processors.

7. How long we keep data

Order records are kept as long as required for tax and accounting purposes (typically six to ten years, depending on jurisdiction). Support emails are kept for up to 24 months. Server access logs are kept for up to 30 days.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your personal data, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request deletion, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information — we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA.

To exercise any right, email support@koumen.net. We respond within 30 days and may ask you to verify your email address first.

9. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

10. Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Access to our servers is restricted to key-based authentication, and we keep software patched. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the small amount of data we hold.

11. Third-party links

Some pages link to third-party websites, including affiliate links. Once you leave our site, the destination’s own privacy policy applies. See our Affiliate Disclosure.

12. Changes

If we make a material change to this policy, we will update the date below and, where appropriate, post a notice on the site. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
